MATTAGAMI RIVER JULY FIELDWORK EVENT
Earlier in July, Moose Cree youth joined Wildlife Conservation Society Canada staff, Moose Cree First Nation youth interns, and Ontario Power Generation for a collaborative 3-day Learning from Lake Sturgeon event at the Lower Mattagami Hydroelectric Complex on the Mattagami River.
Through hands-on activities and connecting with Elders and Learning from Lake Sturgeon mentors, youth learned about conservation, stewardship, namewak (lake sturgeon), and fish entrainment.
What is entrainment?
Entrainment is when fish are pulled through water management structures like generating stations or spillways. It is more common for fish to be entrained through spillways than generating stations/turbine intakes. This is because those more often have “gates” in front of intakes to prevent fish from going through.
Some of the fun included:
observing lake sturgeon monitoring
hands-on water sampling from boats
Elder-youth discussion workshop
stewardship activities like GPS navigation, plant identification and fire-starting
camping, cooking, and cultural activities!
